The Grand Duchess

Hello, I'm Grand Duchess Maria Teresa. I was born in Cuba. I met Henri while I was studying in Geneva. As Grand Duchess, I accompany my husband on official occasions. I have also been very involved in defending those most vulnerable, especially women and children. I'm an ambassador for UNESCO and UNICEF, two very important United Nations organisations, the assembly of all the countries in the world.

Maria Teresa was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1956. When she met Henri at university, she didn't know that he was a prince and would one day become Grand Duke. They got married on 14 February 1981, on Valentine’s Day. They had four sons and a daughter: Guillaume, Félix, Louis, Alexandra and Sébastien.

In 2000, Henri became Grand Duke and Maria Teresa Grand Duchess of Luxembourg.

The Grand Duchess is deeply committed to defending the rights of women, girls and children, and to combating all forms of violence against them. In 1997, she was designated 'Goodwill Ambassador' and, in 2007, 'Eminent Advocate for Children' by the global organisations UNESCO and UNICEF.

Maria Teresa is also an affectionate grandmother who loves spending time with her grandchildren. She enjoys reading, singing, playing the guitar and walking, especially with her dog.
