What is the Grand Duke’s role?

When the Head of State speaks
The Grand Duke takes a very close interest in the lives of Luxembourgers. His speeches are a way of expressing the values he holds dear: tolerance, respect, solidarity and social cohesion, but also economic promotion and respect for nature.

Grand Duke Guillaume has already given many speeches as Crown Prince. He will soon be giving the traditional Christmas speech. Perhaps you have already seen his father, Grand Duke Henri, on television? In his Christmas speech, which is broadcast on New Year's Eve, the Grand Duke talks about the events of the past year. He talks about current national and international concerns and stresses the importance of remaining united and showing solidarity.
The Grand Duke will also address the people of Luxembourg on National Day. In particularly difficult situations, he may address the population to convey messages of encouragement, for instance.
