What is the Grand Duke’s role?
When the Head of State speaks
The Grand Duke takes a very close interest in the lives of Luxembourgers. His speeches are a way of expressing the values he holds dear: tolerance, respect, dignity and solidarity. And respect for nature.
Maybe you have already seen him on television? In his Christmas speech, which is broadcast on New Year's Eve, the Grand Duke talks about the events of the past year. He talks about current national and international concerns and stresses the importance of remaining united and showing solidarity.
The Grand Duke also addresses Luxembourgers on National Day. In particularly difficult situations, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, he may address the public to provide messages of encouragement.
